Once upon a summer, I managed a boutique hotel on the small island of Nantucket.
Late one Saturday evening, I received a seemingly impossible request: a visit to Great Point, the island's northernmost tip, with an old iconic lighthouse surrounded by a wild refuge of seals. Truly a must see! This would require a 3-hour round-trip, driving down a soft, 7-mile beach—a challenge not to get stuck, compounded by finding a driver and 4x4 vehicle on a Sunday morning, and a tight schedule that demanded the client return by 12:30pm to catch a taxi to the airport.
With no availability of staff to spare the next morning, I offered to take the client. Having driven there the previous summer, I knew the route well.
By 9am, I secured a jeep and we were on our way. The client was awestruck by the sight of the white, iconic lighthouse. We then turned the bend and gasped at the spectacle of hundreds of seals basking on the beach. Then unexpectedly, a large group of seals descended into the ocean and turned to swim towards us. The client was elated “Oh my goodness, did you plan this?” she cried out.
We returned to the hotel just in time for the client to catch her taxi. As she waved goodbye she yelled “Next year I’m coming back with my family. Thank you!”
